missing order spectra in double slit diffraction

QueIn double slit diffraction what should be the ratio of a & b such that, the central diffraction maximum contains exactly seven interference fringes. what must be the ratio if the central maximum contains exactly five fringes? 'a' is slit width and 'b' is the separation between the two slits.

Sol.

case when central diffraction maximum contains exactly seven interference fringes

 Ans b/a =3

case when central diffraction maximum contains exactly five interference fringes

 Ans b/a =2

to try it yourself by varying b and a independently click here.

  1. Use above link to check variation keeping a constant and b ,variable this will change number of interference maxima within diffraction maximum, then keeping b constant and varying a will change width of diffraction maxima. Post comments if any
